Laurie & Pat at the Catron Supply Co. in Quemado

Yesterday was a day of multiple flats. Laurie and Pat saved the day when they sold me a tire tube. Pat and her husband arrived here in NM about eleven years ago from California. Previously, they spent eleven years as full time RV'ers. They also worked as volunteers for an organization called MMAP (Mobile Missionaries Assistants Program). This organization depends upon volunteers who go around the country and help with various church projects. Good job Don & Pat!

Special thanks to the owner of Catron Supply in Quemado, for having the store open on Sunday for two bicyclists looking for tire repair parts. You saved the day.

Enid & Dennis

Our nomination for American couple of the year.

Pedaling on a beautiful Saturday (On the Way to the VLA)

Good morning!
We are still at the motel enjoying a wonderful breakfast.
Thank you, Dennis and Enid, for your incredibly generous hospitality.
May you continue to enjoy a wonderful life of love and "high country living".

PS: Don't forget to visit us in Minnesota.

It's time to ride, so you all have a fine day.

A Delightful Discovery in Magdalena, NM

Good evening from Magdalena, New Mexico.

"Good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter" Izaak Walton

George and I enjoyed a wonderful ride today. The weather was perfect and it was especially nice to have a few high clouds diffusing the powerful sun rays. I believe the UV factor here was quite high and certainly must be respected. Apply sunscreen at least three or four times a day and keep those ears covered. After leaving Socorro we faced some serious climbing as we pedaled south and then finally made the big turn heading west. Challenging head winds kept us under control for at least the better part of the day.

Before I tell you about today's delightful discovery, let's step back two days and talk about a bicyclist named Ed. Heading south from Madrid we saw Ed from a distance and stopped and chatted about bicycling. He is an accomplished bicyclist who rides all over the southwest. He takes bicycling to a new level and incorporates so many of the benefits of bicycling into his daily routine.
He was fortunate to retire from the former US West (Qwest) with a pension and is able to bike everyday. It's impressive to me to meet someone like Ed, who really defines what bicycling can mean to a person, and how it can be such a positive force in your life. Keep in mind that serious bicycling is a lifestyle, and all the benefits that accrue from such a choice pay dividends. George and Ed were able to talk about the finer points of road bicycles, while my interest centered on the freedom and personal satisfaction that Ed enjoyed.
Ed, we wish you a long and prosperous lifetime of bicycling. Ride Safely and keep that beaming smile on display for everyone you encounter.

Another interesting encounter occurred yesterday, when we met the parents of Ricky Williams who recently completed the Ride Across America. Many of you may not be familiar with this ride but simply put, it's an amazing feat of riding where individuals and teams compete in a race across America. Can you believe that Ricky's team rode from Oceanside, CA, to Atlantic City, NJ in just eight days? Jan, his mother was so proud of her son and his Dad beamed with joy.
Whenever you think something may be too difficult to achieve, consider what Ricky and his team accomplished.

Late this afternoon we stopped at the Blue Canyon Gallery, and visited with Barbara the artist.
She, and her husband Jim, moved from Grand Rapids, MI to New Mexico about eleven years ago. They have a splendid property with magical vistas and a great art showroom. Not only does Barbara have outstanding creative art, but she also offers ice cream while you are viewing the work. Thank you Barbara for sharing your story with us. It's another example of individuals looking at life's options and making a great choice.

We asked Barbara about possible lodging in Magdalena, and she promptly offered her first recommendation being the High Country Lodge. So, we continued pedaling another mile and arrived at this really neat motel. Immediately, we were greeted by Enid, who along with her husband owns this facility. We were greeted with, "Yes, we have vacancy". Enid's smile was so inviting, and the next thing you know we are introduced to her husband, Dennis.
We checked in, and then inquired about dinner recommendations. You won't believe it, but Dennis and Enid invited us to be their guests for dinner. After showering, Dennis even drove me to the grocery to pick up a few supplies. How's that for incredible service?

Dinner with Dennis, Enid, and their friend Tom, was so delicious. We dined on freshly grilled Trout with side dishes, including green and red peppers. Our conversation ranged the gambit from motel operations to life in New Mexico. Dennis and Enid have been married 31 years and are such a neat couple. It also was such a pleasure meeting Tom and learning about his life.
He and his wife have four children in college. Can you imagine that expense?
We just finished dinner and Dennis offered use of this computer.

Spending time with Dennis, Enid, and Tom has been another outstanding example of why our country is so wonderful. People who care about others and open their doors to strangers really make a difference. Thanks for sharing a little of your life with us.

It's bedtime, and tomorrow will feature a twenty mile ride to the Very Large Array, and then on to Quemado. Talk to you soon.

Camping in Bernardo, NM (2nd night in a row of camping)

Good evening from Kiva RV Park and Horse Motel.

"Climbing up hills is the meditation and the masochism of bicycling." George Brunell

How about this for a change. This is our second day of riding together and interestingly, our second night in a row of camping. Judy, the manager of this nice RV Park where we are camping has been so helpful and kind to us.
It seems after riding all day and eighty-two miles we ended up in just the perfect location.
Since no food is available for purchase, Judy actually provided us with baked beans and bread.
Thanks Judy for your hospitality.

Now lets go back to yesterday (Wednesday).
Chip had arranged for several other bicyclists to ride with us to Madrid, NM. This was a distance of about 22 miles and is a perfect route for bicycling touring. You may be interested to know that Madrid is the fictional home of the movie "Wild Hogs". It's a fun, eclectic community of artists, and other talented individuals living a wonderful life.
On the ride to Madrid, George and I were joined by Chip, Edwin, Ian, and Roger. We had a really perfect day for riding and we arrived in Madrid in about an hour and fifteen minutes. Chip, by the way did really well riding, and even decided to refuse an automobile ride home and instead bicycled back to Santa Fe. Way to go Chip.

We spent about two hours in Madrid visiting with many different people. First, it was a pleasure to meet Chip's boss, Joshua. He creates and sells a beautifully unique style of high end waterfalls that are simply fantastic. You will find his work in homes and businesses across the U.S.

It also was fun meeting and talking to two "Tour Directors" for an adventure bicycling touring service. Backroads offers guided trips to out of the way places across the globe. Christine and Angelisa were out bicycling on their day off, and were spending quality time in Madrid.
Thanks to both of you for sharing your enthusiasm and insight into this exciting vacationing opportunity. We hope to see you again on one of your trips. Christine lives in Montana, and Angelisa splits her seasons between Hawaii and Arizona.

After saying goodbye, George and I continued southward to Escobosa. This ended up being wilderness camping 101 for Dennis McCoy. We are talking no official campsite, just range land behind a small church. I was "out of my comfort zone" big time, but managed to stay alive the entire 12 hours of camping. Howling wild dogs added a new dimension to this experience, as well as the numerous pick-ups and cars that used the gravel road nearby.
But, you know what, I survived and actually felt good about the experience. We had no dinner, and then no breakfast again this morning. Traveling here in rural New Mexico is really isolated.
No cell service and few convenience stores. Bottom line, when you see a service station, stop and buy everything you may possibly need for the next three days.

Did you notice that our weather yesterday and again today was picture perfect?
Sunny and beautiful for two days with great road conditions. Despite George's four flat tires in two days, we are off to a great start.
George is Mr. Humor. He is so talented and funny. Everything we see and do revolves around fun and exciting. Riding with George already has improved my bicycling skills.
It's tough to report, but I suffered my third flat tire this afternoon. Those darn "goat-head weeds"!

Well, that's it for tonight. It's time to put my head on the blow-up pillow, and my torso on the blow-up air mattress. By the way, it works fine when you inflate it. (Yes, I have figured that out.)

Enjoy your day, and thanks again for all the wonderful feedback.
Keep those prayers coming our way.

PS: AS previously mentioned, cell service has been hit and miss (mostly miss). So it may be a few days before additional photos are uploaded.
